Lembro que o uso dessa gordura insaturada, que pode ter origem em vegetais ou no \u00f3leo de peixe, recebeu ao longo do tempo, outras indica\u00e7\u00f5es na medicina, como uso na gesta\u00e7\u00e3o para prevenir depress\u00e3o p\u00f3s-parto ou como estabilizador de humor no transtorno bipolar. Essas indica\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o foram contempladas nestes estudos e n\u00e3o s\u00e3o objeto de discuss\u00e3o por aqui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O primeiro estudo deles, chamado VITAL, avaliou uso de 1 grama ao dia de omega 3, al\u00e9m da suplementa\u00e7\u00e3o de vitamina D para preven\u00e7\u00e3o de doen\u00e7a cardiovascular (AVC, infarto, morte cardiovascular) e tamb\u00e9m para redu\u00e7\u00e3o de risco de c\u00e2ncer. Este estudo acompanhou&nbsp; quase 26 mil indiv\u00edduos com mais de 50 anos por um per\u00edodo de at\u00e9 5 anos. N\u00e3o houve redu\u00e7\u00e3o de risco de ambos os desfechos, nem com suplementa\u00e7\u00e3o de omega 3, nem com vitamina D (abordaremos os resultados de vitamina D em outro post). Ou seja, omega 3 n\u00e3o reduziu de forma significativa o risco de adoecer e\/ou morrer de causa cardiovascular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por\u00e9m, outro estudo abordou essa classe de subst\u00e2ncias com resultado diferente. Trata-se do estudo REDUCE-IT, que j\u00e1 vem causando pol\u00eamica e discuss\u00e3o no meio cient\u00edfico. Este estudo usou uma suplementa\u00e7\u00e3o espec\u00edfica de omega-3, que vale a pena explicar. Ele usou uma forma espec\u00edfica de omega-3, o acido eicosapentaenoico (EPA) altamente purificado, ainda n\u00e3o dispon\u00edvel para o com\u00e9rcio. Ele foi usado em pacientes com obstru\u00e7\u00e3o pr\u00e9via nas art\u00e9rias coron\u00e1rias e tamb\u00e9m em diab\u00e9ticos com m\u00faltiplos fatores de risco cardiovasculares, que apresentassem triglicer\u00eddeos elevados. E, nesta popula\u00e7\u00e3o, o uso do EPA altamente purificado levou a uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o relativa de 25% no risco de infarto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podemos ent\u00e3o descartar de vez os acidos Omega-3 como preven\u00e7\u00e3o de doen\u00e7as card\u00edacas? Para a maioria das apresenta\u00e7\u00f5es dessa subst\u00e2ncia parece que sim.
